A 9/11 Reflection on Security, Preparedness, and Leadership
Where John Was When the Towers Fell
On September 11, 2001, John Mangiameli, Executive Vice President of Se-Kure Controls, was preparing for a trade show at the Javits Center in New York City.
The morning started like any other. Teams were setting up booths, greeting one another, and preparing for the busy days ahead.
Then everything changed.
FBI agents entered the Javits Center and instructed everyone to leave the building. Confused about what was happening, John stepped outside. Calls began coming in from his wife and the Se-Kure office asking if he was safe. Looking downtown, he could see smoke rising from the World Trade Center.
Standing outside, John witnessed the second plane hit.
His hotel was next to a firehouse. In the hours that followed, he watched firefighters return, wash down their trucks, and head back out, unsure of what they would face next.
It was an experience that would permanently change his understanding of security, preparedness, and leadership.
How 9/11 Changed John’s Understanding of Security
The hours that followed felt almost unreal. Streets that would normally be filled with people and traffic were empty. Cars disappeared. Silence was interrupted by sirens and the activity of emergency responders.
For someone who had built a career in the security industry, the meaning of security suddenly became much broader.
It was no longer simply about protecting merchandise or preventing loss. Security was also about human safety, preparation, leadership during uncertainty, and empathy for the people affected by a crisis.
Those became some of the most lasting 9/11 security lessons John carried forward.
Days later, the Se-Kure team was briefly allowed back into the Javits Center to break down its trade show booth. The facility was being prepared for use as a triage center, though tragically, there were few survivors to treat.
The experience put the scale of what had happened into perspective in a way that watching from a distance never could.
Leading With Purpose After a Crisis
With flights canceled, John eventually began the journey home by car.
The drive gave him time to process what he had witnessed. He remembered sitting in his hotel room watching the news throughout the day, trying to comprehend what was happening only blocks away. Above New York, the familiar sound of commercial aircraft had been replaced by military jets.
Experiences like that do not simply disappear when the immediate crisis ends.
For John, the events of September 11 influenced how he approached leadership, relationships, and his work in security. Protecting assets remained important, but the larger purpose became clearer.
Security ultimately involves people.
Preparedness matters. Communication matters. Leadership matters. The ability to remain thoughtful and human during uncertainty matters just as much.
Those lessons have continued to influence how John approaches his role at Se-Kure Controls.
What 9/11 Teaches Us About Security and Preparedness
More than two decades later, John still carries those memories with him.
Among the most important 9/11 security lessons is the understanding that preparedness goes beyond equipment or procedures. A secure environment also depends on trust, awareness, communication, and people who are prepared to respond when circumstances suddenly change.
For John, being human comes first.
September 11 also left him with a lasting respect for the people who run toward danger to help others. Watching firefighters leave the station near his hotel, return, and head back out again gave him a perspective on service and responsibility that has remained with him throughout his career.
That day in New York reshaped his understanding of what it means to be a leader in the security industry.
His story is one of resilience, preparedness, and purpose that extends beyond business. Behind every organization are people whose experiences shape the way they lead, make decisions, and care for those around them.
For John, September 11 became one of those experiences.
The lessons remain with him today.
